American Abstraction: Dialogue with the Cosmos

American Abstraction: Dialogue with the Cosmos is Native American artist Kay WalkingStick's first installation project for an institution and reflects her visual language of personal history, meaning, and memory. This work combines landscape with hand-painted replicas of parfleche bags, the storage bags created and used by Plains women to carry and store dried meat and other items. This use of abstract native designs along with landscape is now frequently seen in WalkingStick’s work, and is a nod to her Cherokee heritage, her interest in women’s art, and her fascination with abstract design.

Reflecting Culture: The Evolution of American Comic Book Superheroes

July 14, 2007–January 13, 2008

This exhibition traces the way in which comic books have reflected national events, aspirations, and attitudes--from the battles waged against Axis powers and corporate corruption by the invincible Superman, Batman, and Captain America, to the era of the 1960s when Spider-Man emerged as the quintessential superhero of his time--an adolescent who had to contend with his own insecurities while fighting evil. Click here for more information.

Dulce Pinzón: The Real Story of the Superheroes

Dulce Pinzón: The Real Story of the Superheroes is an exhibition of photographs by Dulce Pinzón, an artist born in Mexico City. In 1995 Pinzón moved to the United States to pursue her passion for photography. In New York City she experienced what it meant to be an immigrant and how hard it was to try to assimilate into American life and society. Click here for more information.

Will Barnet: Recent Works

As painter, printmaker, and teacher, Will Barnet has made uniquely significant contributions to American Art for seven decades.
