Internships

The Montclair Art Museum offers internships for undergraduate and graduate students. Projects are based on Museum needs and applicants’ interests. This program is designed for students enrolled in museum education or related programs that require internship of practicum credits. Hours are flexible depending on department needs and intern’s schedule. Internships are available year-round.

Internship Positions Are Available in the Following Departments:

Director
Assist Director of the Museum and the Assistant to the Director on various projects including preparation and planning for a future Museum exhibition.

Education
• Preferably students in museum or art education programs or with a strong interest in art or museum education, or art history, to help with researching upcoming Museum exhibitions and the permanent collection for educational purposes.
• Assist in researching teaching methodologies for Docent program.
• Work closely with Education Director and Public Programs Coordinator in program development. Develop mailing lists for all public programming.
• Requires approx. 10-12 hours per week, flexible schedule.

Museum Guides
Research the Museum’s American and Native American collections and train to give tours for children and/or adult groups. Preference will be given to year-round local residents.

Yard School of Art - SummerART
Interns to work during the eight-week summer program (June 29 - August 21, 2009).
Hours are 9:15 am to 5:15 pm Monday thru Friday.
Provide assistance with classes and help with administrative tasks. Other responsibilities include some supply inventory, distributribution of supplies, supervision of campers during lunchtime, assitance in set-up and oversight of end of session art receptions. Responsible, dependable, articulate person(s) are needed for positions available at the Yard School of Art to assist teaching artists in classroom preparation, organize classroom and supplies before and after courses, and assist teaching artists with art students. Some paid positions available.

Registrar
Assist registrars with general administrative duties; preparing incoming and outgoing receipts for loaned objects; data entry of collection items; assisting with the preparation and organization of files for upcoming exhibitions and loans. Ideally for two days per week, graduate students preferred.

Curatorial
Intern needed, preferably art history or museum studies major, twice a week, for exhibition and collections research, clerical assistance (maintaining files), and miscellaneous curatorial department work.

Exhibition Installation
Assist Exhibition Designer and Preparator on art handling/exhibition and permanent collection installation projects. Includes maintenance of work on view and assistance with installation of special exhibitions.

The Store at MAM
Interns learn about the retail world and how the store reflects the Museum's mission.
Typical responsibilities:
• Conduct inventory of the store.
• Research and organize a complete list of every MAM catalog.
• help store manager to prepare for gift show in August and possibly attend the show.

Communications
The Marketing and Communications Department seeks interns to work on a variety of tasks within the department, including updating and developing the website and media databases, writing copy for Museum press releases and publications, helping with graphic design, and public relations work.

Grants/Development
Responsibilities include:
• Research on grant programs and guidelines.
• Updating paper files and updating Raiser's Edge database.
• Filing.
• Assistance with corporate membership fulfillment.
• Help to update proposal attachment files such as resumes, bios, etc.
Skills required: online research, filing, copying, attention to detail, data entry.
The intern should be interested in office work, learning about nonprofit development, and be able to work independently. Graduate students preferred.

Membership
Assist with mailings and brochure design. Ideally a person with good computer skills (Excel, Word, Mail Merge) and a good attitude (who doesn't mind labeling and stuffing once in a while).
