Scholastic Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is an 89-year-old national program that identifies and develops creative teenagers and offers scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors.
The Montclair Art Museum is the sole affiliate sponsor of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in New Jersey, the fourth year MAM has served in this capacity.The competition at MAM focuses on visual art. Its area of service includes the counties of Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.
2012 Scholastic Art National Awards
Twenty-six teen artists from northern New Jersey received prestigious national Awards for their exceptional artwork through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This year’s recipients from the Northern New Jersey District received a total of 30 awards in visual arts on the national level. One student, Batrek Yassa of Jersey City Art High School, was honored with the Portfolio Gold Award, which is the highest level of achievement and includes $10,000 scholarship, as well as a silver award. In addition, two students, Yeon Jae Chung and Yena Kang of WOW Art Studio earned one Gold and one Silver Award, and Sarah Abrahamsen of The Elizabeth Morrow School received a Gold Award and was recognized as Best in Grade.

2012 Scholastic Art Regional Awards
A jury of professional artists, curators, and arts educators spent 27 hours reviewing 2800 works of art submitted by over 1000 individual student artists from 150 townships in northern New Jersey. Approximately 30% of the 2800 artworks we reviewed received some form of recognition on the Northern NJ regional level with over 150 students receiving Gold Key awards. All Gold and Silver Key winners were honored with an award ceremony and presentation on Wednesday, February 15. One work by each of the Gold Key winners was display in an exhibition on view at MAM February 11-March 9. The work by these students are forwarded on to national level for further consideration and competing for scholarships.
