Teen Studio: Montclair Snapper: A Photography Workshop with Tyler Chan

11:00 am
1:00 pm

Join photographer Tyler Chan at the Montclair Art Museum for Montclair Snapper, a photography workshop designed to spark creativity and connection through portrait photography.

Chan’s lesson will emphasize photography techniques including the rule of thirds, the symbolism of props, and the impact of environmental backgrounds in portrait photography. Students will also join Chan for a tour of his exhibition, Montclair Snap Memories.

Participants will be encouraged to pair up with each other and capture portraits together. This workshop has goals of creating an environment of connectedness and comfort through photography with new people! The artist emphasizes that 90% of photography is about human connection, and the last 10% is just the gear.

Participants MUST bring a smartphone or camera—any device that can take photos—and get ready to see portraits in a new light!

About Tyler Chan and Montclair Snap Memories

Coming out of Montclair NJ, Tyler Chan, a Chinese-American raised with strong ties to tradition, discovered photography at 15. Initially documenting suburban American teen life, the journey transformed into preserving cultural heritage. Chan documents evolving community spirit, delving into the international landscape of rap music through connections with artists. His goal is to challenge stereotypes, empower communities, and spotlight the pride in heritage.

Montclair Snap Memories is an exploration of contemporary suburban life in the United States. It offers insights into the struggles of growing up in our interconnected world, and the times we had in school. Through personal stories, Chan shows the experiences of those youth around us.
