Eric-Paul Riege: jaatłoh4Ye’iitsoh Performance
Eric-Paul Riege: jaatłoh4Ye’iitsoh Performance
SEPT. 13: 2 p.m. | MAM MEMBERS
SEPT. 14: 11 a.m. | FOR THE PUBLIC
The experimental fiber and performance artist Eric-Paul Riege (Diné) returns to Montclair to activate a hanging soft sculpture with two durational performances inside MAM’s new long-term installation Interwoven Power: Native Knowledge / Native Art. Riege created an earlier version of the work as a site-specific response to the temporary exhibition Color Riot! How Color Changed Navajo Textiles. Evolving and adding to the work in conversation with MAM, it is now titled jaatłoh4Ye’iitsoh [17–18] + [][][][]. The word jaatłoh4Ye’iitsoh is a permutation of the Diné term for "earrings for the big gods."
Riege creates his art as embodied and living, an extension of Diné cultural knowledge and constantly evolving weaving practice. This unique pair of "earrings” has taken new shape and meaning over time, upholding both Riege’s artistic vision and the ethos of Interwoven Power, which emphasizes collaboration and change.
