Depicting Nature: Monotypes with Gelatin Plates

Sunday, October 22, 10:30 AM
4:30 PM

The changing seasons reminds us of nature's many moods. The artist Charles Burchfield understood this well and chose to explore it in his many works focusing on a weather theme. View the museum's exhibition, Charles Burchfield: Weather Event, and create their own observations in a printmaking studio experience based on Burchfield's symbols, patterns and color palette. Manipulating water base media on a gelatin plate surface, students will learn how to evoke those weather themed emotions with layering, texturing, painting, subtracting and collaging. Simple materials will yield surprising results as we explore the sounds and sights of nature's elements such as clouds, trees, leaves, sun/moon and wind-all within a print experience.

$35 material fee is payable to the instructor.

In Burchfield's Wake: Artists Respond to the Environment

As the earth heats up and more and more people inhabit it, consuming precious resources and exploiting the landscape, we humans find ourselves confronting a need for significant change in the way we respond to our world.  Environmental artists Adriane Colburn, Ellen Driscoll, and Marina Zurkow have made this question central to their art making practices.  On this panel moderated by MSU Professor Julie Heffernan, they will discuss their work and address issues of resource consumption and its material lineage, as well as romanticized notions of wilderness, the alteration of nature by industry and climate change and the relationships between scientific exploration and exploitation.

Reception to follow Q&A. Educators earn 2 hours of PD credit. Montclair State University students and faculty with ID receive FREE admission.

MSU/MAM Art Talks series is a collaboration between the Master of Fine Arts degree program of Montclair State University and the Montclair Art Museum.
