Mickalene Thomas

in conversation with Chief Curator, Gail Stavitsky

MAM patrons and collectors Audrey Gaelen and her late husband Norbert founded this lecture series last year to spotlight the artistic process and motivations. The Second Annual Gaelen Lecture features Mickalene Thomas, a contemporary African American artist best known for her complex paintings made of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Her work draws from Western art history, pop art and visual culture to examine ideas around femininity, beauty, race, sexuality and gender. Program followed by Q&A and reception hosted by the African American Cultural Committee.

Professional Development Certificates will be available for educators.

The Gaelen Family Artist Lecture is made possible through The Gaelen Family Artist Lecture Endowment Fund.
