Drawing on extensive archival research and hundreds of interviews, Berman traces Lichtenstein’s early influences, his search for an artistic identity, and the breakthrough that led to Look Mickey in 1961 and the development of his iconic style. The illustrated lecture will feature works of art alongside photographs of Lichtenstein, his friends, and family.
About Avis Berman
Avis Berman is an independent writer, art historian, and oral historian whose work spans American art, museum history, photography, and design. She is the author of Rebels on Eighth Street: Juliana Force and the Whitney Museum of American Art, James McNeill Whistler, Edward Hopper’s New York, and Roy Lichtenstein: The Impossible Collection, among other publications.
Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, New York Review of Books, ARTnews, Smithsonian, Washington Post, and numerous museum catalogues. As an oral historian, Berman has interviewed more than 500 artists, curators, critics, dealers, collectors, and other figures in the art world for major museums, foundations, and archives.
Her biography of Roy Lichtenstein will be published by Abbeville Press in October 2026.
