Have you ever wondered why the buildings you live, work, and play in, look the way they do? Beyond a label of “style”, they are imbued with multiple meanings and are reflections of the people, places and societies they inhabit and serve.

John Fotiadis will take you through the history of architecture from its very beginning and into the modern world, citing 10 important and iconic buildings along the way. Join him for a spirited and fun journey through civilization’s grandest mirror and what has been called “the mother of the arts”.  

This class is online with live instruction. Students will need to have a computer, tablet, or phone with internet and access to Zoom.

John Fotiadis

John “Yanni” Fotiadis is a modern day Renaissance man whose creative endeavors span Architecture, Music, and the Visual Arts. His broader interests, referenced in his creative output, include history, philosophy and metaphysics.

John has been a licensed architect in the United States for 25 years and has worked in the profession of Architecture for over 30 years. Over the course of his career, he has provided architectural design services to top tier real estate development companies both nationally and internationally.

In addition to projects in New York, John has also designed projects in San Francisco, Doha, Dubai, Seoul, Moscow, Panama, Kyiv, Donetsk, Batumi, Athens, Istanbul and Ankara.
John’s design experience covers a broad range of projects and scales including residential, commercial and hospitality design. Recently he designed the Radisson Hotel at Tsinandali, Republic of Georgia, which was one of four finalists for best tourist hotel of 2020 at the MIPIM Awards 

John is also known for his musical talents having composed and performed music for film, TV and podcasts. In addition he is an accomplished visual artist. His recent series of drawings, documenting a number of ancient sites in Greece, called “The Solace of Antiquity”, have been met with critical acclaim. A public exhibition of this series is being planned for 2021.  John has spoken publicly on numerous and diverse subjects such as the inherent idea of “Branding” as a component of contemporary architecture, and how it traces back to the broader idea of architecture being imbued with inherent meaning throughout history.

John graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture (cum laude) from Temple University in 1989. He also has a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University (1991).
