Master Workshop: Memories That Aren’t Mine

10:30 am
4:30 pm

Join AACC Founders Fellow and exhibiting artist Debra Cartwright for a workshop inspired by a series of collages she created using her own family photos. This activity uses black and white photographs, collage elements (from chosen magazines), and watercolors. Referencing Saidaya Hartman’s book Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments, participants will be using secondary sources to build a first-hand narrative.

Debra Cartwright’s work explores the historical connection between gynecology and its impact on Black women in America, shedding light on disparities in maternal mortality. She draws parallels between landscape painting and its representation of land use to highlight the exploitation of Black women's bodies in medical experiments. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Debra is a dedicated educator, teaching painting at Mason Gross.
