Adult (age 16+), In Person, Classes, Yard School of Art, Painting, Janet Boltax

Beginning and Intermediate Portrait Painting

Tuesdays, 8 weeks
7:00 pm
9:30 pm

Learn to paint a portrait from a live model without fear! This class progresses step-by-step, demonstrating techniques and tools to help you draw an accurate likeness and then use value, color, brushwork, and composition to create a vivid three-dimensional portrait. You will learn how to truly “see” an individual face rather than relying on symbolic mental images and learn to mix accurate flesh tones—colors that not only change depending on the skin color of the model but are also affected by the lighting and colors reflecting on the face.

The class includes instructor demonstrations, multiple handouts, and opportunities to study and discuss the portraits of old masters and contemporary artists.

Previous drawing skills are highly recommended.

This class will include a visit to MAM’s galleries during class time to learn from artists on view and be inspired.

Janet Boltax Headshot

Janet Boltax

Janet Boltax has always been powerfully drawn to portraiture and figurative art. During the past 10 years, she has been working on a series of oil portraits in which the paintings are accompanied by interviews she conducts with the sitters. They include 25 portraits of people over 90, 12 portraits of two transgender individuals as they transition, double portraits of identical twins, and others.

She has had numerous solo exhibits of her paintings throughout the U.S., and is also an accomplished printmaker and collagist. Most recently Janet had an extensive article about her work published in the September issue of Artists Magazine along with an online segment which can be accessed here

She has been teaching art for the past 15 years; the last 10 of them at MAM. Janet loves to teach and is continually striving to introduce new techniques and methods in order to help her students progress and excel in their work."
