Beginning/Intermediate Portrait Painting
Beginning/Intermediate Portrait Painting
Working from a live model, you will learn fundamental techniques for creating a convincing likeness while developing their unique personal style. Instruction will focus on understanding the structure of the head, color-mixing, attaining correct values, and brushwork. You will learn how to truly “see” an individual face rather than relying on symbolic mental images. The class includes instructor demonstrations, handouts, and opportunities to study and discuss the portraits of old masters and contemporary artists. The class will visit MAM’s galleries to be inspired by artworks on view. Prior drawing experience is highly recommended for this class.

Janet Boltax
Janet Boltax has always been powerfully drawn to portraiture and figurative art. During the past 10 years, she has been working on a series of oil portraits in which the paintings are accompanied by interviews she conducts with the sitters. They include 25 portraits of people over 90, 12 portraits of two transgender individuals as they transition, double portraits of identical twins, and others.
She has had numerous solo exhibits of her paintings throughout the U.S., and is also an accomplished printmaker and collagist. Most recently Janet had an extensive article about her work published in the September issue of Artists Magazine along with an online segment which can be accessed here.
She has been teaching art for the past 15 years; the last 10 of them at MAM. Janet loves to teach and is continually striving to introduce new techniques and methods in order to help her students progress and excel in their work."
